The Weihenstephan standard defines how the WS data points can be transmitted to higher-level IT systems (e.g. MES). The two communication standards WS OPC UA and WS Protocol are available for this purpose. Both communication standards define the form in which the data is structured and transmitted.
For communication in an Industrie 4.0 environment, the Weihenstephan Standard relies on OPC UA. WS OPC UA is available since version WS.10 of the Weihenstephan Standards. Compared to WS Protocol, one of its advantages is the self-description of data. WS OPC UA
WS Protocol, a proprietary TCP/IP protocol, is also still available.
